Chimes

Personalised Learning and Support for Every Student's Journey

Chimes

Chimes at Dawn House School:

The pupils in Chimes have difficulties accessing the classroom and group learning for a variety of reasons including anxiety, self-regulation, social communication and sensory processing. These pupils require a bespoke approach to their learning and time in school.

The aim of the Chimes provision is to provide a safe space where pupils can access an engaging, creative, and bespoke curriculum, linked to individual needs, targets and their EHCP. Hoping to provide a developmental culture fueled by high aspirations, orbiting a communicative core that will prepare our young people for adulthood.

Prior to starting at Dawn House School, families and core team staff are invited to a placement meeting to discuss the needs of the child.  This is particularly important as many have suffered adverse childhood experiences such as trauma and have failed in one or more educational settings.  Families have the chance to share likes and dislikes and help the core team to have an overview of what is important for and important to the child prior to starting school.

The Learning Environment:

Our Chimes provision is housed in its own dedicated building, creating a nurturing and focused learning environment. Each pupil is assigned their own room, which they are encouraged to decorate and theme according to their personal interests, fostering a sense of ownership and individuality in their learning space. In addition to the personalised rooms, Chimes features communal areas where students can come together, including classrooms, a kitchen area, and social spaces. These shared environments promote collaboration, social interaction, and a sense of community among pupils, enhancing their overall educational experience.

The Curriculum:

The Chimes curriculum at Dawn House School is thoughtfully designed to meet the individual needs of each pupil, ensuring they receive a comprehensive and engaging educational experience. Our dedicated teachers plan a curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum structure while also allowing for personalised learning. This curriculum is delivered by skilled Teaching Assistants (TAs) who work closely with each student, creating a safe and supportive environment where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.

Where appropriate, Chimes pupils have the opportunity to access specialised rooms and teachers in the main school for certain subjects such as PE, Art and Food and Nutrition. This integration not only enriches their learning experience but also helps them develop social skills and confidence in a broader school setting.

At Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, pupils are encouraged to select vocational options, which provide excellent opportunities for them to interact with their peers in the main school.

For those pupils who are cognitively able, we may also offer the chance to pursue GCSE options in subjects like Maths, Science, and Art, further preparing them for their future endeavors.

The overall purpose of the curriculum is to prepare pupils for adulthood through a positive and supportive framework. Families are also supported, and strong pastoral care is provided to help improve the outcomes of our young people.
